Good For Her Presents:
The Fifth Annual Feminist Porn Awards

Toronto, ON – February 22, 2010. The Good For Her Feminist Porn Awards celebrate their fifth anniversary of honouring pioneering female-friendly filmmakers.

After starting out with humble beginnings back in 2006, The Good For Her Feminist Porn Awards are getting ready for another outstanding event that furthers the debate around feminism and porn, pleasure and politics.

A landmark anniversary like this is also a time for reflection – what has changed in feminist porn and porn for women in the last five years? Are we any closer to a goal of an erotic entertainment industry that reflects the desires of women and that presents people of colour in a positive, sexy light? That looks at authentic queer sex, at people with disabilities, at diverse gender representation and at REAL people, in all their sexy glory?

The past five years have seen a multitude of improvements in the adult industry as a whole, especially as it pertains to women. Perhaps most important of these is the explosion of female filmmakers looking to change the way that sex is presented on screen. Queer directors are moving away from delicate lesbian sex to authentic representations of the diversity of queer communities and exploring the ways that sex and culture interact. Straight female directors are showing that porn for women doesn’t always have to look like romance novels come to life, but that soft-core and hardcore are equally sought after by discerning female porn viewers.

What follows this growth in female directors, are of course, female viewers. Women are watching porn, talking about porn, buying porn and sharing porn with their partners in record numbers – a reported 1/3 of porn viewers are women, and as many as 9 million women access adult websites per month. Since Good For Her started the Feminist Porn Awards in 2006, our DVD sales have more than quadrupled, and attendance has grown every year of our celebrations, from 250 in 2005 to a combined attendance of 700 in 2009.

Good For Her will celebrate the gains that empowered, progressive porn has made in the last 5 years, with an eye to inspiring further change in the next generation of filmmakers. Our Fifth Anniversary festivities will include appearances by incredible filmmakers who are expanding how everyone, no matter what their gender, is being represented in adult films, including:

Tristan Taormino is an award-winning author, columnist, editor, sex educator, and adult filmmaker. She is the author of six books including Opening Up: Creating and Sustaining Open Relationships, and The Big Book of Sex Toys. Tristan and her work have been featured in hundreds of publications and media outlets including O: The Oprah Magazine, The New York Times, Redbook, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Entertainment Weekly, Details, New York Magazine, Men’s Health, and Playboy. She has appeared on CNN, HBO’s Real Sex, The Howard Stern Show, Loveline, MTV, Oxygen, Fox News, The Discovery Channel, and on over six dozen radio shows. In 2006, she launched her own adult film production company, Smart Ass Productions, and became an exclusive director for Vivid Entertainment. For Vivid, she directs several different series including the Chemistry series, and helms Vivid’s sex education imprint, Vivid-Ed. Her films have won four Adult Video News Awards, three Feminist Porn Awards, an Adam Film World Award, an X-Rated Critics Organization Award and garnered dozens of other award nominations. In 2007, she became the first female director to win the Adult Video News Award for Best Gonzo Movie for her film Chemistry. In 2009, XCritic.com named her the #1 Female Adult Film Director in its top ten list.

Shine Louise Houston – As the pioneering producer and director of Pink and White Productions, Shine has released 9 DVDs since 2005 including The Crash Pad and Champion. Graduating from San Francisco Arts Institute with a Bachelors degree in Fine Art Film, her works have become the new gold standard of adult cinema. Shine's films have been recognized as the next big wave of women produced porn and have been screened worldwide from Berlin to New Zealand. She has received recognition for her works at the Feminist Porn Awards as well as being one of the first winners of the European Feminist Porn Awards for her pioneering work in the industry.

April Flores is a Latina feminist, muse and erotic performer who seduces viewers with her intoxicating beauty and fearless sexuality. She’s also had her body cast for the first plus-size sex toy ever (April Flores’ Voluptuous CyberSkin Love Toy). This toy went on to be re-worked by world-renowned artists as they designed one-of-a-kind creations using plaster molds of her torso as their canvas. April has appeared in feature stories in Bizarre Magazine and AVN Magazine, cover of the coffee table book Wild Skin by Carlos Batts as well as many other fashion, pin-up and erotic magazines. She’s also appeared in films from Heartcore Productions, Belladonna/Evil Angel and more.

Nica Noelle is an adult film actress, writer and director. She conceptualized and created Sweetheart Video and Sweet Sinner Films with Jon Blitt of Mile High Media, and was recently hailed by Nightline ABC as the top female adult film director. Nica has been a published writer for many years, and her work has appeared in numerous national magazines and websites. Aside from her continuing work in adult films, Nica is also an avid science and nature writer, and she is currently writing a book about urban wildlife and the relationship between humans and backyard animals.

Additional guests include Dylan Ryan, Jiz Lee, Courtney Trouble, Madison Young, Judy Minx and more.

Good For Her Presents:
The Fifth Annual Feminist Porn Awards
&
Provocative.Public.Porn: The Year’s Best in Feminist Film

Toronto, ON - March 1, 2010. Good For Her celebrates the Fifth Annual Feminist Porn Awards with a record number of nominees.

The Good For Her Feminist Porn Awards are celebrating their Fifth Anniversary! Now the longest running celebration of erotica focused on women and marginalized people, The Good For Her Feminist Porn Awards are happy to announce the nominees for the 2010 edition of this fantastic awards ceremony.

But wait, what is feminism doing getting into bed with porn? At Good For Her, we are feminists and we sell and rent porn. In 2006 we decided that it’s not enough to criticize adult films for not adequately representing women’s - and in many cases, men’s - sexuality. So we decided to do something about it. As porn star and performance artist Annie Sprinkle famously said, "The answer to bad porn isn't no porn…it’s to try and make better porn!" Good For Her couldn't agree more. We believe the world is inundated with cheesy, cliche, degrading, and patronizing porn. But we also believe that erotic fantasy is powerful, and that women and marginalized communities deserve to put their dreams and desires on film, too. As feminists and sex-positive people, we want to showcase and honour those who are creating erotic media with a feminist sensibility.

The nominees on this year’s list continue to strive to provide erotic entertainment that is smart, sexy, and continues to appreciate women as viewers. In addition to featuring 54 nominations in total - the highest number of nominated films and websites ever - this year’s nominee list also includes movies from more countries than previous years, and includes filmmakers from: Great Britain, Spain, The Netherlands, France, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, and of course, the porn epicenter of the world, The United States. Canada is also represented among the nominee list with erotic website, GoodDykePorn.com, and “Kiwi-Canuck” Astrid Glitter.

In addition to seeing more directors outside of North America, The Fifth Annual Feminist Porn Awards are excited to include a new category for Hottest Website, which aims to celebrate those corners of the World Wide Web devoted to fierce feminist explorations of sexuality. This year also marks the first Emerging Filmmaker Award, which offers an upcoming director a cash prize that is intended to aid in the completion of a film project or to help finance distribution. We’ll also feature the first ever Viewer’s Choice Award, picked through the audience’s votes at Public.Provocative.Porn: The Year’s Best in Feminist Film – a screening of invited guest’s work at the Bloor Cinema on Thursday April 8th.

The nominated films for the 2010 Feminist Porn Awards show the true diversity of feminist porn - from Tristan Taormino’s raunchy Rough Sex and boundary-breaking educational fare like The Expert Guide to Anal Sex for Men all the way to the beautifully captured scenes of outdoor sensuality in Carlos Batts’ Dangerous Curves, to Nica Noelle’s couples-friendly Victorian-inspired hardcore fantasy A Man and a Maid, and then looping around to Shine Louise Houston’s gender-bending and genre-defying queer celebration Crash Pad Series. These are all just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the talent and sharp erotic eye of the feminist porn filmmakers in the 2010 nominees list.

These nominees are under consideration for categories including: Sexiest Straight Film, Hottest Trans Scene/Film, Most Deliciously Diverse Cast and many more. The Nominees for the 2010 Good For Her Feminist Porn Awards are (in alphabetical order – film title first)

  1. Thanks for the post, Megan! I love the concept of Feminist Porn Awards! Yet, I can't help but be disappointed that there aren't more web sites on offer for straight women...you know, sites with hot naked men? For the Girls is great, and I'm sure lots of the films are great too. In surfing the web, however, naked-women seem to rule the day. Naked women are great, but as a hetero gal who loves looking at men and couples, I can't help but feel excluded by my feminist sisters. Feel free to recommend more sites on your blog that may be more to my liking.

  2. Thanks Fangirlswoons, and I couldn't agree more! We need more hot hunk pix and content for the ladies, on the web, on our cable channels, and on our magazine stands. Jana and I will definitely be posting more sites, plus offering more hot content ourselves, including an upcoming FemFeature on one of the hottest male models/dancers in the business (who's also very talented and a total sweetheart:). Stay tuned and enjoy!:)

    Thanks,

    Megan
